ALPS. ARCHITECTURE. SOUTH TYROL.
Palazzo Cavanis, Venice
10 May - 23 November 2025
Kunst Meran Merano Arte, together with the South Tyrolean Architecture Foundation and the South Tyrolean Artists’ Association, is pleased to present a new stage of the exhibition project New Architecture in South Tyrol 2018-2024. Following its initial presentation in Meran/o, where it was very well received by press and public alike, the exhibition will from 10 May be appearing under the new international title ALPS. ARCHITECTURE. SOUTH TYROL. in parallel with the 2025 Architectural Biennale in Venice’s Palazzo Cavanis.
ALPS. ARCHITECTURE. SOUTH TYROL. presents a comprehensive survey of the architectural development process in South Tyrol between 2018 and 2024, relating its most recent architectural history and reflecting the ongoing transformations in the construction landscape. The projects being presented were selected by a high-calibre jury, consisting of curator Filippo Bricolo (I), architect (Bricolo Falsarella Architetti) and lecturer at the Polytechnic University of Milan; Annette Spiro (CH), architect (Spiro + Gantenbein Architekten ETH/SIA AG) and full professor of architecture and construction at ETH Zurich; and Elisa Valero Ramos (ES), architect and professor of architecture at the Escuela Técnica Superior de Arquitectura of the University of Granada. The jury initially viewed over 240 submitted projects in order to draw up an initial shortlist then, after numerous site visits, selected 22 “main projects”; these are presented in detail both at the exhibition and in the accompanying high-quality catalogue. A second group of 28 “special mentions” will be presented in reduced form.
The jury’s selection criteria are also reflected in the theme of this year’s Biennale, “Intelligens. Natural. Artificial. Collective.”, chosen by architect and curator Carlo Ratti. While the exhibition is primarily intended to investigate the core question as formulated by Filippo Bricolo – namely whether there exists a unique South Tyrolean architecture and, if so, what are its characteristics – it also addresses the main themes of the Biennale. The focus is on projects that stand out for their sustainable planning, careful reclamation of town centres and the use of landscape and materials in a way that best conserves resources – all aspects that are pronounced features of the region’s architectural transformation, which are explored in depth in the 22 main projects.
Traditionally conceived as a travelling exhibition, usually shown at several locations in central Europe, the architecture exhibition by Kunst Meran Merano Arte is now being sent on tour – destination Venice. Georg Klotzner, President of Kunst Meran Merano Arte and initiator of the ALPS. ARCHITECTURE. SOUTH TYROL. project, explains: “The proximity of the theme to this year’s Biennale offers us a valuable opportunity to present the architectural diversity of South Tyrol to an international expert audience. Encouraged by the positive coverage of our architecture exhibitions at home and abroad, we are now convinced that South Tyrolean architecture can hold its own in comparison with other regions in the Alps and further afield.”
The exhibition project ALPS. ARCHITECTURE. SOUTH TYROL. is generously supported by the Departments of German Culture, Italian Culture and Ladin Culture of the Autonomous Province of Bolzano, as well as by the Sparkasse Foundation.
As part of the exhibition, it is planned to hold various talks, workshops and evening events – some involving the participating architects, thus offering fascinating insights into the participants’ projects and visions. The venue will be the beautiful courtyard of the Palazzo Cavanis. Further information on dates, events and talks will appear shortly at www.alps-architecture-southtyrol.com.
